What makes Level 5 different from a standard finish
Full Coverage, Not Just Seams
A typical Level 4 finish only gets joint compound over the taped seams and screw heads, then a coat of drywall primer to help hide the slight texture difference underneath. Level 5 goes further: a thin skim coat covers the entire surface, seams and open field alike, so the compound and paper have identical texture everywhere before primer ever goes on.
Why Light Matters
Flat, low-sheen paint in a dim room hides a lot of small imperfections. Glossy or semi-gloss paint doesn't, and neither does a wall that gets hit with strong natural light from a big window or a skylight. Every seam and slightly raised screw head shows up under those conditions on a standard finish, which a full skim coat actually eliminates rather than just hoping the primer covers it.
Where It's Worth It
Accent walls, media rooms with recessed lighting at a low angle, and any room with south-facing windows are the classic candidates. It's also increasingly requested for open-concept homes where one continuous wall runs from a dim hallway into a bright living room, since the finish needs to look consistent across lighting conditions that vary wildly across the same surface.

Do I need a Level 5 finish for every room?
No. Most rooms with flat or low-sheen paint and average lighting look completely fine with a standard Level 4 finish. Level 5 is worth the extra cost specifically where glossy paint or strong, low-angle natural light would otherwise show every seam and screw head.
How much more does a Level 5 finish cost compared to a standard finish?
